On The Road Again

Posted by Stan Harrington

Before rumors commence to fly and everyone comes to agreement that the old man and mother have totally went off the deep end, let me assure you that we are fine and are in full control of our faculties. We just got the bug to go on the "road" again. If all goes as planned within the next seventy two hours, we will be going on a little road trip in very early October. Our destination point will be the Little Village By the Slough (Homer), however to get there we will take the long way around after spending a couple of days in LA to visit little ones and to take on supplies.
From LA, we will cut south to Idaho to visit Glacier National Park, into Montana to visit historic sites such as the Little Big Horn. Montana to North Dakota and South Dakota to visit the Black Hills and Mt. Rushmore. Cutting southeast across Nebraska to visit "old" family homestead sites and possibly meet some "cousins prior to going into Kansas and Missouri, where we have to spend the night at Branson just to see Dolly Parton! From Branson, into Lakeview, Arkansas to visit my brother, Lanny with a side trip to visit my grandparents grave sites and old homesite.

From Arkansas, we will then turn Southwest passing through Oklahoma and Texas into New Mexico. Turning north, we will spend a few days in Western Colorado visiting family before heading into the Utah country and the Canyon Lands National Monument. Continuing south, we will visit the Grand Canyon before dropping further south into the Redrocks of Arizona on our way into Phoenix to once again visit family and friends. While in this area we will also visit Baghdad to visit family on our way to Laughlin, Nevada where we will have the opportunity to spend a couple of days trying to re-coup our costs at the casinos. If we do not prevail in Laughlin, we will still have a day or so in Las Vegas and if all else fails, we can hit Reno, Nevada on our way out of the state. Crossing northern California, we will once again see the Pacific Ocean at Ft Bragg and follow Highway 101 up the coastline to Portland. Will possibly visit Whidbey Island prior to crossing the Canadian border and up the Frazer River Canyon to meet up with the Alcan Highway at Dawson Creek to commence our final leg into Homer.

Lot's of details to handle prior to departing, I think I should change the oil in the old F-150 that way I will not have to check it the entire trip. The Little Lady and I do not have to get any shots, but poor Dutch has to go to the vet to get shots and even a health certificate to get into Canada. Why don't humans need health certificates? We are also going to get a GPS Chip inserted into him, not that we are concerned about loosing him, but if we should happen to get lost, you can always call the "hotline" and get a fix on "Dutch", we should not be far away. Although not a primary mission for this trip, he and I will be doing a little "bitch" looking - however, he maybe making a trip to Florida for that. "No time frame, just point it south and head down the road with no destination for the day".

Not that I need to retire yet, but that touches a jealous note. You might want to consider a current vehicle registration as well as change the oil. Them Canadians are mean. Not so much as Cantwell - with it's flesh-eating mutants, though.

I think you may need to hire a dog baby sitter so you can play. I can make the arrangements for you. She would probably do it just for travel expenses... and I don't require much.

Thanks for the reminder Plumma, I had forgot that my registration expired a year ago - perhaps I should get that renewed prior to trying to cross into Canada, going to put some fresh air in my tires also, the air in there should be pretty stagnant since it has been three years. Dog sitter - that is why we are getting a chip - I have traveled with you before, the first slot machine you saw you would promptly forget your responsibility and Dutch would run wild, cavorting with all the un-desirables.

My dream vacation! Heidi gets car sick and that is a lot of miles on the road. NOt sure they make enough paper towels. I however can offer my gps tracking system I promise you will get lost...but you will have fun doing it. I dont sleep on a road trip and I bet I can keep more hours than you dad. So how bout a chauffer? I will drive...you three can play. I require a bed once in awhile and some food on the rare occasion.

I also know how much food you can consume and the quantity of "snack food" that you hide for your personal use without having to share. Did I mention, I discovred your unused stash while coverning your abode at the HITW. That is o.k., I left a small opening for Butch and Sundance so they could take advantage of your stash. Ask Daddy Bear about the damage those two little crooks can do!

hehe...If there was a stash left it was not on purpose I can promise that...If I do not hide my stash I dont get to eat it...just like my dinner plate....so is this little adventure a reenactment of a "honeymoon" trip many years ago? how romantic. (if not change plans a bit so it is and mom will give you anything you want.)

Stan, you need the chip. Your itinerary is why I ignore your routing suggestions. And how come Beaver is not on your planned sites to visit. Did you know Butch Cassidy was born there. WHo is taking care of the squirrels.
THat route back, got to Prince George, turn left and work your way up the Cassiar which joins the Alcan at Watson Lake. (the side trip to Hyder is nice-Go get Hyderized)

The kids are excited to see Ruger, they have already decided that he will be sleeping with them! Also I forgot to send that letter down with my mother, so I was unsure if you wanted us to send or just save it until we see you this weekend...? Well your plans sound good but we were debating on if you were taking your old Ford or if you traded it in for a new one?
